Adding a new room to your home can be a wise
decision on many levels. Whether you are remodeling
your basement into new bedrooms or building an
addition, a new room is like a blank canvas. It can
truly reflect your style through customization from
floor to ceiling. If you have made the decision to add
a room and have already picked your contractor, it is
time to get started! This guide will give you
information on how to work with your remodeling
contractor.
Good communication between you and your contractor
is the key to a successful project. Communicate openly
and often! Be sure to get any agreements or changes in
writing. This helps keep everyone on the project
organized and in the loop. Have your contractor review
material orders with you to prevent possible mix-ups or
oversights. After all, you do not want to be
disappointed by the wrong paint color or flooring.
Discuss special considerations you have. If you
have a schedule you must stick to due to work or kids,
compare it to your contractor's schedule. Do they work
standard set hours? Or can they work around your
schedule? Collaborate and make a schedule you can both
be comfortable with, and discuss possible changes in
advance.
Make sure your contractor is aware of any special
concerns or circumstances in your home. For example,
your contractor should be aware if you have small
children that may need to be near the work area, or if
your home and property are strictly non-smoking areas.
However, make sure you take into account the needs of your contractor and his employees.
Are you comfortable with the
prospect of workers using your restroom? If not,
consider renting a portable restroom. You can also help
by making sure there is a clear path from entryways to
the work area. Make sure that the area where work will
be performed is clean and clear of clutter.
Last but not least, a great contractor deserves a
great client. Be a great client by providing what help
you can. This does not necessarily mean jumping in on
the remodeling work. Provide old towels or t-shirts for
workers to wipe their hands. Protect your carpet and
flooring by laying down towels or carpet scraps.
Provide a box of doughnuts at breakfast, or order in
pizza at lunchtime to really keep spirits up. Working
closely with your contractor will lead to an amazing
new space in your home!
